How to Wash Silk Pillow Cases

Sleeping on silk is such a relaxing feeling. I wake up feeling pampered and renewed each morning.

Even if you don’t want to use all silk bedding, using silk pillowcases with regular cotton sheets is still an option.

Washing silk requires a special technique if you want it to stay fresh and soft. Keep in mind that silk is a natural fiber. To care for silk fibers, you will want to wash them carefully.

Why should I use a silk pillowcase?

Here are a few reasons why I recommend silk pillowcases and sheets:

-Silk pillowcases help keep your hair frizz-free. They are great for healthy hair.

-Reduce the number of wrinkles on your face. Silk pillowcases and sheets are great for sensitive skin.

-Silk is a natural temperature regulator, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter

How do you wash silk pillowcases

Here are the basic steps to wash silk fabric. When washing silk pillowcases, hand washing with mild detergent is best.

You can use your washing machine if you like, just machine wash on the gentle cycle.

  • Fill a sink or bathtub with lukewarm water and add a small amount of gentle detergent. swish around to create suds.
  • Turn the silk pillowcase inside out.
  • Gently place your silk pillowcase or sheet into the water and let it soak for up to 30 minutes.
  • Use your hands to gently agitate the fabric and work the suds into it.
  • Rinse well with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Gently press out excess moisture. Never wring out excess water.
  • Hang or lay your silk pillowcases flat to dry. Larger objects can hang on a drying rack. Never put silk in the dryer!
  • Iron on low heat if needed to remove wrinkles. Use a silk setting if you have one. I also recommend a pressing cloth.

Extra tips to wash silk sheets

  • If you are washing a silk pillowcase, stuff it with a clean towel to help keep its shape.
  • If you are washing a silk sheet, be sure to wash it alone or with other delicate items.
  • To help keep your silk items looking their best, store them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Do I need fabric softener when washing silk sheets?

No, you don’t need fabric softener. In fact, it’s better not to use it as it can leave a residue on the fabric.

Can I use Woolite to wash my silk?

Yes, you can use Woolite. Be sure to follow the directions on the bottle and only use a small amount of detergent.

I really have much better luck with Eco Breeze.

Yes, but it’s best to use the delicate cycle and put them in a mesh bag to protect them. Use cool water and a mild detergent.

When should I dry clean silk?

It’s best to dry clean silk items that are heavily soiled or stained. You can also take your silk pillowcases to the dry cleaner if you don’t want to hand wash them.

How often should I wash my silk pillowcase?

You can wash your silk pillowcase as often as you like. If you sleep on it every night, you might want to wash it once a week. But if you only use it occasionally, it can be washed less often.

Removing stains from silk clothing and silk bedding

If you have a stain on your silk clothing or bedding, it’s best to take it to the dry cleaner. But if you want to try to remove the stain yourself, here are some tips:

  • For protein-based stains (like sweat), blot the area with a clean cloth dampened with cool water. Then apply a small amount of dish soap or gentle detergent to the area and blot again.
  • For oil-based stains (like makeup), blot the area with a clean cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. Then apply a small amount of dish soap to the area and blot again.

  • For food stains, blot the area with a clean cloth dampened with cool water. Then apply a small amount of dish soap to the area and blot again.

You can also try using a stain remover specifically for silk. Follow the directions on the bottle.

Never use chlorine bleach on silk fibers.

Storing silk pillowcases

When you’re not using your silk pillowcases, store them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. You can keep them in a drawer or on a shelf.

You can store silk sheets with your other fabric sheets and extra pillowcases.

Caring for your silk pillowcases and sheets is not difficult, but it does require a little extra attention. With proper care, your silk bedding will last for many years.
