WHY I STARTED PLAYING ANIMAL CROSSING

When the quarantine was put in place early last year, I had slowed down my life quite a bit. I had my younger son home doing virtual school and my work seemed to screech to a halt.

I needed an outlet while stuck in the house, so I did something I hadn’t done in years… Started playing video games. Well, I should say game, because it was only one.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch was being mentioned A LOT and not from the children in my life but from friends my age. Moms. Women. I had to try it for myself.

REGULAR NINTENDO SWITCH vs NINTENDO SWITCH LITE

The first thing I had to do was buy a Switch. My son had the regular Nintendo Switch with all the bells and whistles, but I also knew of the Lite version that was a little less scaled down (and comes in really fun colors).

After much consideration, I decided on the Nintendo Switch Lite in yellow.

Selecting a color wasn’t easy since it comes in SO MANY awesome colors:

TEAL

BLUE

CORAL

Friends, I am obsessed with this game. OBSESSED. I immediately loved it and I am still playing regularly over a year later (and since Nintendo adds fun, free updates to the game, it never gets boring).

What I love the most about Animal Crossings: New Horizons is the design elements, especially when it comes to home and island decorating/designing. There are endless custom designs you can use from other very creative players and the ability to create fresh designs yourself.

I thought I would share some of my favorite designs I’ve created here because why not? Perhaps it will inspire you as other user’s designs have inspired me. Today’s design: Retro Kitchen. I’m really proud of this one.

ACNH RETRO KITCHEN DESIGN

Perfectly vintage with oranges, yellows, and hints of black.

I secretly want to redecorate my kitchen IRL like this.

HOW TO CREATE THE DESIGN

I’m going to break down the design piece by piece below.

This isn’t wallpaper, though it looks like it is. Instead, I used the custom design app on my Nookphone to find a solid orange design (MO-T53J-C81D-2MWQ), then clicked “display here” and “wall, as is.” You won’t have any windows after you do this, but don’t worry, I’ve gotcha covered in #3 and #4.

ORANGE RETRO FLOORING. Found in Nook’s Cranny. You could also do the floor as I did the walls in #1 if you don’t currently have this flooring (or use another retro orange or yellow flooring).

SIMPLE PANELS (LIGHT GRAY) using custom design: MO-2VSV-15GT-WR14. Found in Nook’s Cranny.

CUSTOM DESIGN CANVAS x 2 using custom design: MO-1T2D-G3H0-KPHK.  Follow the instructions in #1, but use the canvas option to place on walls. You can then move them around as you wish.

CUSTOM DESIGN CANVAS x 2 using custom design: MO-VKSS-CMTV-LY88. Follow the instructions in #1, but use the canvas option to place on walls. You can then move them around as you wish.

YELLOW MEDIUM ROUND MAT. Purchased from Saharah.

TABLE WITH CLOTH w/ CUSTOM CLOTH DESIGN using custom design: MO-VKSS-CMTV-LY88. Found in Nook’s Cranny.

BOX SOFA (YELLOW/BLACK) x 2. Found in Nook’s Cranny.

DINER CHAIR (BEIGE/WHITE) x 2. Found in Nook’s Cranny.

SYSTEM KITCHEN (BLACK). This also comes in yellow/black, which would fit beautifully in this design as well. Found in Nook’s Cranny.

REFRIGERATOR (YELLOW). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

REVOLVING SPICE RACK (ORANGE/COLORFUL). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

DISH-DRYING RACK (BLUE/AQUA). This rack also comes in green/yellow, which would be even better than blue (I just need to find it!). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

SIMPLE KETTLE (WHITE/RED). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

BERLINER. Found in Nook’s Cranny during the holiday season (right before New Year’s Eve).

TURKEY DAY CASSEROLE (WHITE/ORANGE). Found during Cozy Turkey Day from Franklin, DIY recipe, and Nook’s Cranny.

GAS RANGE (BLACK/WHITE). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

MINI VAN. Pocket Camp.

MINI-CACTUS SET. Found in Nook’s Cranny.

LECTURE-HALL DESK (WHITE/BLACK). This is also available in orange/beige (haven’t found it yet). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

ROTARY PHONE (ORANGE/BLACK). Yellow would work lovely, too! Found in Nook’s Cranny.

RATTAN TABLE LAMP (BROWN). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

FAN PALM (GREEN). Found in Nook’s Cranny.

CACAO TREE. Found in Nook’s Cranny.

PANSY TABLE (YELLOW/GREEN). DIY recipe.

ORANGE LILIES. Picked hybrid orange lilies placed on the pansy table.

POT RACK (YELLOW/ORANGE). Found in Nook’s Cranny, a balloon, tree, or gifted from a villager.

WALL FERN (WHITE). DIY recipe.

COFFEE CUP (WHITE). Found in Nook’s Cranny.
